What We DoWe are the Oakdale Youth House, a ministry of Ywam San Francisco located right in the heart of Bayview Hunters Point, where 36,000 reside within its neighborhood limits. Built up of 62% African American, 22% Asian and the rest Latino and White. The community is held together through family and is championed for its emerging leaders, it is also recognized for those gifted both musically and artistically. Life abounds both in and around this community, but struggle is a concept all one familiar with.

Here is some information about the youth in this community.

  • There are around 11,000 children in the Hunters Point Community.
  • Few recreational activities are available for children.
  • What We DoFew parks safe enough to play in.
  • 40% of the children live below the poverty line.
  • Children in this community are more likely to die from violence than any other form of death.
  • Between the ages of 5-14 are when these children are introduced to sexual activities, drugs, alcohol, & recruited into gangs.
  • There are several gangs in and around Hunters Point that affect numerous families and businesses.
  • There is an estimated 60-70 shootings in the neighborhood a year. Most of the children have had family members who have been victims of gang violence.
  • The fear of gangs plagues this neighborhood and the school districts.
  • Many gang members are mistreated boys and girls who felt alone and found nothing to belong to, no one to trust except a gang family.

What We Do

While we try to teach our children all about life,
Our children teach us what life is all about.

Our Ministries:

What We DoTeen Bible Study is held every Monday night at the Oakdale house. It is a safe place for the teens of the community to come, eat dinner family style, play games and hang out.

Kids Club is held every Wednesday at a local church. We play basketball, play board games, and have reading & small groups. It is open to any kid in the community between the ages of 6-12.

After School Club is an invitation only program held every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. About 12 kids come to the Oakdale House after school to work on homework, have art time and play outside.

At this time our team consists of only 3 staff members. The ministry is in definite need of at least 2-4 more staff in order to run effectively. My experience at SOS in San Francisco was by far the best summer I've ever had!  It meant A lot to be to be living in a community setting where the people In June 2007 I joined in a summer of service program at YWAM (youth with a mission) in San Francisco. its was AMAZING. I learned about intercession prayer, leadership skills, God's love and authority, and how to listen to and meditate on God's word.
